BRAIN INJURY INFORMATION
WHAT CONSTITUTES A BRAIN INJURY?
An estimated 5.3 million Americans currently live with disabilities resulting from Traumatic Brain Injury. (Brain Injury Association of America)
Every 21 seconds, one person in the U.S. sustains a traumatic head injury. (Brain Injury Association of America)
A brain injury is any physical force or toxic exposure that changes the physical structure of the brain.
A traumatic brain injury can occur without one's skull ever making impact with a surface. In fact, brain injuries are often the result of a violent movement of the head forward and/or backward, causing the brain inside the skull to hit against the bones. The resulting injuries can be very debilitating.
A brain injury can occur even if a victim never loses consciousness. For years, many people believed that as long as one remained fully conscious, they must not have sustained an injury. However, the development of imaging technologies and better understanding of brain function have proven that continued consciousness is no measure of brain injury.
